God’s Critical Updates

Show me Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all the day.           Psalm 25:4-5 NKJV

Have you ever turned on your computer and discovered that you need to download the most recent critical updates? I confess that sometimes I hurry on, and out of impatience begin work  hoping that nothing will go wrong. In the same way God offers each of us daily the guidance and protection we need to walk with Him. He is trying to protect me from my spiritual enemy in the same way as my software is alerting me to the dangers of malware, viruses or other electronic ne’er do wells.

The Bible tells us to download God’s latest spiritual updates to help us navigate today’s pathway. Sometimes it is the malware of our own ways that pops up in the operating system of our minds. Sometimes it is the temptation to fit in with the world around that is shouting  for our attention. But no matter the source of the malware we have the opportunity to ask God to overwrite it with a download of His truth.

Our daily spiritual battles will no more disappear from our  lives than will spam from our e-mail accounts. But every day we can make a new determination that since God alone is our salvation then we will wait take the time to download His updates and call Him up on His customer support line called prayer. He is eager to hear from us and He wants to walk with us through every valley no matter how dark! imported from phone 157

A Million Hugs and Kisses

All the brothers and sisters here send you greetings. Greet one another with a holy kiss.  1 Corinthians 16:20

The U.S. Department on aging tells us that 70% of the 1.4 million U.S. residents in long term nursing care do not receive a single visit from a friend or family member over the period of an entire year. One woman told an interviewer that she was sad to think that “No one touches me unless they are paid to.”

But numbers tend to make our brains freeze over maybe it helps to count missing kisses and

A million hugs.

Paul commands us to greet one another with a holy kiss. At Christmastime there were a lot of church and community groups mobilizing to come in and visit local nursing homes. But now in the middle of January with the last of the tinsel put away till next year there stretches ahead another 11 long months. How many hugs  and kisses  can we give away this year?

My Easter Miracle – Part Two

How Easter Found Me

How in the world I ended up 3,000 miles from home was a tangle of events ranging from a broken home where my parents seemed to me as confused as I was. Adding in plenty of recreational drug use and my decision at 17 to move out on my own and you might begin to get the picture of how I ended up sitting in that pew owning nothing more than a guitar and two changes of clothing in a back pack.

The church service began with some happy singing and clapping. That was definitely something I had missed at the Lutheran and Congregational churches my parents had brought me on occasion.

Once the singing ended the pastor gave a message but the words of his sermon really weren’t what connected with my heart. What really penetrated was the love that I felt all day from the people around me. Here were folks who seemed genuinely concerned, not just looking for some angle to get something out of me. When I had traveled through California I had met others who had told me about Jesus. Some even invited me to church but I was afraid to commit myself. It all seemed strange and though the idea of believing in Jesus was appealing, it also seemed like too simple of a solution. Could finding the most important thing in life really be so easy? It would take a miracle to break through all my fears and excuses and regrets.  But it was Easter and on Easter miracles happen.  Continue reading →
