Did Jesus Have a Job?

One fact that has constantly amazed me about the heroes and heroines of films is that most of them are rich but almost no one has a job. I have questions like: what does Batman do for a living or where did Mr. Darcy get the money to buy all that artwork? One of my professors in Bible College  used to say that if today were the day that Jesus was coming; he would still get his brief case ready and go to class. His point was that we all have a job God has given us to do and if we are doing our best; then that is good enough for Him.

In the Bible we see that Moses was a shepherd, Amos a farmer and the Apostle Paul made tents. The only unemployed guy was John the Baptist who lived in the desert and he ate locusts and wore homemade clothes(Pretty sure there won’t be many takers for that!). In fact  most people overlook that even Jesus had a job! Yes; even the One who came to earth to give His life for our sins, worked from nine to five for most of His adult life. How strange to think that Jesus Christ worked hard to pay the bills and take care of His mother and younger brothers and sisters. So if it was good enough for Jesus then why not us? The most important job we could ever do is to serve others with whatever Jesus puts in our hands until the day He comes. What has he put in your hands today?

Anyone Thirsty?

When we moved to Florida, drinking the public water isn’t so great so we began buying bottled water. My wife is a big fan of Aqua Fine water while I like Dasani. But many years ago when we lived in Southern Missouri our water came from a cistern by the side of the house. It looked like a well but was just a 20 foot deep concrete lined storage tank. When it rained the rain water passed through a charcoal   filter and when it didn’t we called the water truck. I still remember the year we d

ecided to clean it out and I was lower to the bottom to bale out the residue and scrub it out with bleach. What was down there was pretty yucky and we had been drinking it!

Jesus has a way better source of water in mind for our life than that old cistern. He promises clean fresh living water. It is a water that does not need to be pumped in but instead it springs up from the depths with a connection to the river of life. Being connected to Jesus means always having  cold clean spiritual water to drink as well as to share with anyone who is thirsty. Are you thirsty today. Jesus invitation still stands. Come to Him and find the best water of all!

Emmaus Road

So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. Luke 24:28-29 ESV

It is interesting that these two disciples had walked all day with Jesus. They had listened to all He had to say. They had talked with Him and told Him all their problems. But all down that long hot and dusty road, they never realized who they were spending their day with.

All down the path they had walked focused on their hopelessness, confusion and fear. At any moment Jesus could have stopped them in their tracks shouting, “Hey guys, it’s me! I came back from the dead! Everything is going to be great!” but He didn’t. Instead Jesus first asked them about their problems then patiently explained from scripture God’s plans. Then He fell silent and acted as if He would just go on without them.

Then those disciples made a choice that changed their destination from a village to a vision. They chose to offer a small kindness to the stranger who had shared His day with them. Jesus accepted their invitation and when they sat down together to eat, He blessed the bread and showed them who He was. Will we invite some of the least likely strangers to sit with us tonight? When we make room for them at our table Jesus will still break the bread and give us a glimpse of His face just as He has been doing for 2000 years!
