A Glad Heart

Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad. Proverbs 12:25 NKJV

My Grandfather’s words “It’s not what you know but who you know that counts.” reflected his experience navigating a naval career during consider that prayer offers us the opportunity to put in a good word for someone going through a tough time?WW2. That holds as true today as much as at the War Department in the 1940’s; because having just the right person put in a good word still makes all the difference.

When people tell us about their problems our natural tendency is to try to cheer them up based on “what we know”. We say not so smart things like “It can’t be that bad!” because based on our experience their situation seems okay. But we are missing the unique opportunity that God gives us through prayer to put in a good word with the only one who can really make a difference. Of course we should still offer encouraging words when we see those closest to us in the pits and depressed. But “who we know” will trump what we know, every time in the long run. Only God can ultimately make a heart glad. Only He can put a smile on a face that will light up a life again!

Apple Harvest

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. John 15:5 NKJV

As a New Englander I don’t have much experience with grape vines. But I do remember that in the winter we used to prune apple trees.

First to go was the sucker growth. These long spindly sprouts looked healthy but in reality, suckers just stole strength from the better branches and in return yielded nothing but leaves.

Next we sought out the dead branches. Often these were hidden by the healthy ones and each part of the tree needed to be examined and have the dead wood cleared to open a pathway for sunlight and air.

Last of all we carefully cut away any diseased limbs. Fireblight was the usual culprit and could only be safely removed in the coldest season. That is why we chose winter so as not to spread it to the rest of the tree.

What remained behind waiting for spring was the good fruit bearing wood. To the casual observer the trees looked savagely treated. But the orchard owner could see the beautiful but still dormant fruit spurs just waiting for their chance to give the sweetest and most abundant harvest at the right time.

Without him we can do nothing. But pruned and shaped to the master’s design he promises we will one day yield a mighty harvest!

Things that are Seen

If when Paul tells us that he chooses to live by focusing on things he cannot see it seems mysterious remember the prayer which Jesus taught us.

Our Father – the invisible God

Who is in heaven – an unseen place

May Your name be Holy- an unknowable purity

Your kingdom come – a government we don’t see yet

Your will be done – while all the world rejects its invisible laws

Give us this day our daily bread- His unforseen miraculous provision

Forgive us our trespasses- an unexpected mercy

Lead us not – a loving guidance

Deliver us from evil- an astonishing rescue

For Yours is the kingdom power and glory – just 3 of the limitless riches of our Father

Forever Amen- an unimaginable eternity!

Almost everything He taught us to pray for is invisible. The only two things we can see are our daily bread and our sin. How wonderful a Gift He has given when He became the living bread so He could take away our sins!
