Learning to Wait

And Calls us to His Side

"Oh, what’s the use?”
I ask God while I'm praying
Since you know the way
That things must be
Then in quiet I listen
For an answer from
The one who gave Himself for me

For once He prayed till sweat Flowed like blood drops
Through the night, with sorrows
He was tossed
Then He surrendered all that
He had wished for
Our lives to save
And for our sin’s full cost

And then as dawn
Had still not fully wakened
On the third day
Before the sun was bright
The tomb was opened
So we could see inside that
He is alive
And calls us to His side!

But as I rav'd and grew more fierce and wilde - At every word,
Me thoughts I heard one calling, Child! - And I reply'd, My Lord.
George Herbert - excerpt from The Collar

A Star Burns Bright

A star burns bright a billion years
Before its rays grow dim
A sparrow lives just two or three
And yet God cares for him

But long before the dawn of time
God’s candle lit the night
And came for us at Bethlehem
When shepherds, saw His light

Now to our hiding place He comes
At doors that we’ve kept locked
And offers light for our dark home
If we will open at His knock

Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends. Revelation 3:20 NLT

Going Back to School

While we New Englanders have enjoyed Labor Day weekend as our final summer family fling, here in Florida and much of the South, the kids are gearing up for school in early August. Either way, the pinch of new shoes, finding our seat in homeroom and the weight of Algebra books are an inevitable destiny. This morning that idea of going back to school reminded me of a poem I wrote a while back that encourages us to remember that no matter how old we are, God has some new lessons for us to learn today.

Flying Lessons

The hummingbird was sleeping in
When mother shook his wing
Wake up John it’s time for class
I heard the school bell ring!

He opened first one tiny eye
Then peeked out of the nest
He knew the day for flying lessons
What was his mom planned next

So out the door with trembling heart
John’s wings began to beat
Then up into the wind He flew
To lessons down the street!
