Being Content

In Paul’s letter from a roman jail to the church he makes the astonishing statement:

Philippians 4:11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content

This week end as I was walking with my grandson I took several pictures of some birds who were flocking around tree branch just above our heads. They didn’t seem much disturbed by our approach or our voices as we watched them. On closer examination I discovered that they were perfectly content right where they were because they were surrounded by the abundance of seeds in the ash tree where they perched.

Paul found himself “perched” in prison but he had discovered contentment. He saw around him the opportunity to share the gospel, a place for prayer and most importantly for us a place to write a good portion of what we call the New Testament!

Where have you found yourself perched today? Can you see the provision that God has  deposited abundantly in the branches around you? Every place has its own season of abundance. Every restriction focuses us on what we can still do. Every unwanted change, every circumstance beyond our control and every unexpected sorrow draws us closer to our Savior whose promises never change, who never lets us go and whose presence gives us comfort through every stormp1020480

Why should I feel discouraged?
Why should the shadows come?
Why should my heart be lonely
and long for heaven and home?

Memories and Mountains

As the mountains surround Jerusalem so the Lord surrounds His people, from this time forth and forevermore. Psalm 125:2

Because it is so easy for us to forget his faithfulness God puts His reminders all around us. He sees we are quick to remember our difficulties and slow to count our blessings. So in His wisdom He chooses to create a mountain of memories so great that we can not possibly forget. He writes on His creation a love note. ” Trust me, I am working everything out for your good. Be back soon! Love God”

Trees Walking

Mark 8:24 And he looked up and said, ” I see people but they look like trees walking.”

This man could begin to see once Jesus Christ prayed but he didn’t really know what he was looking at. We can’t know if what he lacked was focus, depth perception or if he was simply confused. We are all sometimes a bit like him. We are beginning to walk in some new opportunity, ministry or relationship but in spite of the excitement of the moment we still are stumbling over our own feet. We see people but not as God sees them. Tonight rather than being discouraged we need to go back to the Lord. Yes He has begun the blessings but He isn’t through yet. Take this moment to place again into His hands what He has begun and He himself will give us His own 20/20 heavenly vision!
