Visiting Jesus This Christmas

And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ Matthew 25:40 ESV

“Kin you afford to lose this?” Alice said as she fingered the blue sweater that I had thrown over her shoulders as she sat shivering in her wheel chair. I smiled and nodded in assurance and then she began to tell her story. “I dun know how I ga heer! Awl I know is I wuz waitin’ fer the bus an’ I fell an now am heer.”

Alice’s story is so like that of a thousand others. She could remember clearly growing up in Ireland and often reminded me, “New one az soffered like the Irish people.” But Alice did not know that she was in a nursing home understand why she was there, or what had become of her family. This year as Christmas is approaching remember Alice’s story. It may take only a sweater, a plate of cookies of a few heart-felt Christmas carols to unlock the secrets of those who are especially precious to Jesus. Maybe He calls them brothers and sisters because like Him there has no room been found for them at the inn.

Why not ask God to help you share the love and message of Jesus Christ with them this year? It doesn’t matter whether we come with costly gifts like the wise men or with only praise like the shepherds. Jesus sits by their sides and He will counts it all as done for Him if we will simply choose to come! If you have been praying about it and just are not sure how to get started, I have included a short video that may help you put feet to your prayers.

Free Book Day – Nursing Home Ministry

Today  I am going out again to nursing home ministry as I have had the honor to do for almost 30 years. About ten years ago I began writing about this special mission field in hopes to pass along some of what God has helped me to learn. So as my small gift to you my readers, today or tomorrow anyone who would like my most recent book on nursing home ministry can down load it for free.

New Frontiers is not only a brand new manuscript but it also offers a new approach to what many of us call nursing home ministry. Today even the term; “nursing home” is no longer adequate to describe the multiple types of long term care that are becoming the new normal. Wherever God is calling you and me; whether to special needs ministry; outreach to an assisted living community or bringing music to a memory care unit; we are all involved in long term care ministry. New Frontiers is about learning how together, with God’s help, we can make a difference in some one’s life today!

Church Growth Through God’s Eyes

And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.          Acts 6:7 KJV

Nursing home outreach doesn’t carry with it the razzle-dazzle of building programs, youth ministry or Holiday pageants, but it does offer a unique way to connect to our community. That is exactly what we see in this passage from the book of Acts. The number of Christians grew rapidly not because of some church program but because they agreed to work together in unity to take care of feeding poor widows.  Imported from phone 083

In the early days of the church some things brought about growth that we will not be able to replicate (Such as five hundred people seeing Jesus alive after His resurrection). But there are other principles which we can follow in any culture, time or place. Showing the love of Christ by caring for our older generation connects us with their friends and families in a deep and powerful way.  That is not to say that we could simply use nursing home ministry as a strategy to build our church; but rather that amazing things happen when we align ourselves with the heart of God. Ministering in a nursing home blesses not only its residents but also those of us who serve. Teen-agers are reminded that their energy can give a smile or bring tears of joy. Middle aged people find out that the value of their own life will not change with age. Retired folks discover that residents will treasure their friendship because so few ever come to see them anymore. Through His amazing plan God will help His church to grow in numbers as together we draw closer to Jesus Christ.
