Every Face a Name

All who are victorious will be clothed in white. I will never erase their names from the Book of Life, but I will announce before my Father and his angels that they are mine.
Revelation 3:5 NLT

I have been listening my way through the Bible and this morning spent 20 minutes hearing a list of hundreds of names at the end of Nehemiah. While at first blush long genealogies seem super boring, God showed me that they are not boring to Him. He reminded me that every time He writes down a name He sees that person’s face and every face is another life paid for at the cross. To Him those long pages of names are precious to Him. In fact Jesus tells us that the angels break into rejoicing every time one more is written down. But at the end of our lives it will not matter what things others write or if they remember our face. What will count is if our name is written in God’s Book and if our face will be seen at His throne! Is your name written down?

God’s 911 Number

Blessed be the Lord, for he has wondrously shown his steadfast love to me when I was in a besieged city. I had said in my alarm, “I am cut off from your sight.” But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy when I cried to you for help. Psalm 31:21-22 ESV

When we lived in the inner city it was not unusual to have to dial 911 once a month. Though the reason for the call was rarely serious crime, there were many traffic accidents in front of our home, and the sound of crunching metal sent us first to the window and then to the phone. We didn’t call our pastor, our family or even our best friends, because we knew that if we dialed 911 that they would pick up the phone right away. In this Psalm, King David’s problem was that the city he was living in was being attacked by an army. Now I would say that’s a real emergency. David wasn’t just a little worried, he was scared to death, but instead of running away, he ran and dialed God’s 911 number because  he needed help and he needed it right away.

Whether we are facing a critical health issue, a family emergency or a desperate financial situation, our assurance is that if we call on God that He will always answer. David tells us, “He heard the voice of my pleas.” and “he has shown His steadfast love!” Those two great promises were not only for David, in Bible times, they are also for us today. God still loves His people with a steadfast love and He is waiting to answer Heaven’s 911 if we will only call on Him!

Time and Place For Praise!

Blessed be the Lord from Zion, he who dwells in Jerusalem! Praise the Lord!
Psalm 135:21 ESV

If you are like me you probably read through this passage assume that God dwelling in Jerusalem was just a thing for Bible times. After all Jesus told us that the time was arriving when people would no longer worship in a geographic location. God is a Spirit and that is where we should worship.

But if we look at the book of Revelation we discover that there indeed is a place where God will be worshiped for eternity called the New Jerusalem. So where is that place and why would God change His mind?

Well maybe….just maybe it is because the New Jerusalem is not just a geographic location. It is that the dwelling place that Jesus went to prepare is you and I. It is an eternal resting place for God (and us) built of all our brothers and sisters throughout all the ages who have put their trust in Jesus Christ for their salvation. We are the tabernacle of God. Our hearts are the location He has chosen to dwell in. And together as we praise and lift up the wonderful name of Jesus – God will be worshiped in Spirit and in truth forever and forever! Now what could be more worth both living and dying for than that?!
