I Love Being Rejected!

For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. James 1:3

If you are a writer, then you know that the most dreaded response from a publisher begins with the words, “Thank you for your submission, but…” We cringe because we know that those nice words invariably begin every rejection letter! However, if your first novel, article or poetry was jubilantly accepted by a large highly acclaimed publisher, then read no further. But, if like many of us, you have written several novels, articles, or oodles of poems and have little to show for it beyond a few meager acceptances and an inbox filled with rejections, then let’s see what the Bible has to say. In today’s verse, James, tells us that it is neither our acceptances, nor our successes that increase our faith but our tests. When our best efforts are challenged, just as heavy work pushes our muscles to the breaking point, so our rejections cause us to dig deeper and focus more clearly on our writing goals. They bring us face to face with the why’s of our ambitions, and the purpose of our message. Are we writing so that we can become popular, or is our true motivation to serve God and our readers? Rejection has pushed me to keep going beyond my frustration, when what I thought was a great poem or article, wasn’t something anyone wanted to read, or a publisher was willing to pay for. But to be honest, it has been my rejections that have motivated me to work towards becoming a better writer, a better editor and most of all a better follower of Jesus. So, I love being rejected! It is those wonderful rejections that have drawn me closer to the heart of Jesus: Who is The Word of God, and the best-selling message of all time!

Letting Go – Taking Hold

.. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, Philippians 3:13

As our grandson wrestled with learning to paddle board last summer we were all treated to a comedy of errors. One moment he was up smiling triumphantly, the next tumbling off to the peals of laughter from his cousin and his older brother. But no matter how funny he looked to us AJ showed that he was serious about mastering the challenge. He was willing to temporarily let go of his pride in order to show everyone that he could be a winner.

Are you and I half as dedicated to the goals God has put in front of us? The apostle Paul was in many ways just like our grandson A.J. . He refused to let the past hold him back. No nostalgic memory was worth clinging on to if it meant missing out on what lay ahead. Also, just like our grandson, the opinions of others held little value compared to what God had in store. Finally, just like A.J.- Paul learned that victory was sure as long as he kept things in balance in life. Paul reached his goal at the moment when he took hold of the prize and stood straight and strong in the presence of Jesus Christ!

Crossing Over

On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.”  Mark 4:35

God has wonderful plans for another chapter in our lives. He is not content to leave us where we are and He challenges us to trust Him for something new. It seems so nice and peaceful just resting here on this side of what we know, but Jesus may be saying to you what He said to the disciples, “Let’s go to the other side!”

Jesus is inviting each of us to prepare to be ready for new things. But His challenge includes a word we may have missed, Jesus said “Let’s!”  That single word makes all the difference when we launch out to points unknown.

There’s a song we sing at our Brazilian church in Portuguese that loosely translated goes something like this:

Sail away with faith in Jesus

Because this is the way you will see

What beautiful things He will do

Because with Him you will be secure.

translated from Solta O Cabo Do Nau

So if you feel overwhelmed by the smallness of your boat and the vastness of the sea, remember that in your little boat travels the King of kings and the Captain of all ships. No matter the storms, our Lord will never abandon us, nor allow the waves to keep us from the safe harbor of His arms!
