No Such Thing as Bad Ice Cream!

“There’s no such thing as bad ice cream!,” is our friend George’s favorite sayings (and he stays skinny!). George will take chocolate or vanilla, strawberry or peach. Whether it is on a cone a cup or a milkshake, he is ready to sit down and take a moment to enjoy it. I think it would be safe to say that George delights in ice cream. When the writer of today’s verse tells us that he delights in God’s word, I am reminded of George. It makes me realize that no matter the situation that is handed to me this morning, that I can continue to delight in the promises of God. In fact I think we all could agree that, “There is no such thing as a bad promise of God!” Every promise is perfect, pure, eternal and though sometimes hard to swallow, they are always sweet in the end! Has God given you some special promises? Do you have a favorite?

Word Wednesday – Unfolding

The Hebrew root of the word “puthach” translated as unfolding in the NIV means: to open wide, loosen, plough or begin. Whichever of these we apply to this verse, God’s word can only be interpreted to us by God’s Spirit. As Jesus said, “the words I speak to you, are spirit and they are life.” John 6:63. If we want them to be a part of our life today we need to humbly ask Him and then listen with our hearts for His unfolding to give us light.

Fresh Daily Bread

Give us this day our daily bread. Matthew 6:11 KJV

On cold Winter mornings when it was too dark to go to our job site, it was the perfect time to stop at Abe’s Bakery. Pushing open its doors unleashed the fragrance of fresh baked hard rolls mingled with the aroma of coffee. We quickly ordered, poured our coffee and headed out to the truck. There we hungrily devoured those rolls with butter still dripping from their edges, feeling richer than anyone else on earth. Abe’s fresh baked rolls, always remind me of the daily bread that Jesus taught us to pray for.

First, just as at Abe’s it pays to show up early to get the freshest rolls. If we just dive into our morning and then sometime later ask God for help, He still gives it but when we eagerly push open His door early, He treats us to the aroma of daily bread straight from Heaven’s oven! Secondly, no one on earth can give us anything better than what God has provided, so we should be thankful. Wishing we had what others have, only takes away the joy of receiving exactly what God has prepared. Lastly, just as we never worried if Abe would be making fresh rolls the next morning, Jesus wants us to know that when we pray that we can trust Him to give us His daily bread, new every morning and fresh every day!
