Master Gardener or The Master’s Gardener?

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5 ESV

When I opened my first landscaping business in 1987, I came in with more than a dozen years of experience, a professional license and plenty of specialized training. My plan was to use my expertise to guide and educate customers in the “right way” to maintain their ornamental gardens and trees. Boy did that not work out! What I spent the next thirty years learning was that my job was to serve the desires of my customers. Once I figured that out after years of butting heads, running the business became a delight and people usually loved the results.

Sadly, when some of us come to know Christ, we begin with almost the same mindset. Maybe we have been to Catechism class or spent time in Sunday School and we feel pretty sure that we know how to be good Christians. But that also; most definitely won’t work out! I remember one day a customer noticed a bumper sticker on my truck that said, “We Have a Friend in Jesus” and he asked, “Is that your partner?” I shook my head and laughed answering, “Oh no! He’s the boss!”

Yes, Jesus is the boss, and we are the branches. Doing things our way is no longer an option. But when we get in synch with His garden design, then everything our life will begin to yield beautiful fruit!

Flying Lessons

The hummingbird was sleeping in
When mother shook his wing
Wake up John it’s time for class
I heard the school bell ring!

He opened first one tiny eye
Then peeked out of the nest
He knew the day for flying lessons
What was his mom planned next

So out the door with trembling heart
John’s wings began to beat
Then up into the wind He flew
To lessons down the street!

But this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14 KJV

So Much More

So Much More!

Much more was the grace
 That cried Father forgive
On that long ago dark afternoon
When with His last strength our Lord Jesus cried out
These people know not what they do

First was Judas who sold His Lord out
And there was Pilate who bowed to the crowd
And Herod who mocked Him and had him bound
And the High Priests who rejected His word

And the throng who were shouting “Crucify Him!”
Then the soldiers who nailed Him hard to the wood
And one thief who still refused to believe
And the one whose spear drew His last blood

These all were His enemies much more forgiven
But there is one more I finally found
That guy was the man who ran from God’s love
Till His grace so much more tracked me down!

For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. Romans 5:10 ESV
