Being a Peacemaker

I have learned that peacemaking has a price. While others take positions that they feel are right and demand that others be condemned…I cannot. I must allow myself to be included among the accused and listen till God gives me something of value to say. Only His Words are the balm of Gilead that bring healing to the wounded and true peace that will outlast any war.

Dove of Peace

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:                 Ecclesiastes 3:1

Pete Seeger was sort of quoting from King Solomon when he sang

“A time for peace, I pray it’s not too late!” in the song “Turn Turn Turn” At the time the song became a number one hit in 1965, the unspoken reference was to the Vietnam war though very few of us teens had read the verses from Ecclesiastes which had inspired the song. However, as King Solomon also pointed out:

What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. Ecclesiastes 1:9

As Christmas approaches we also are faced with the continued threats of terrorism and war. Whether people are, dining out, going to the movies or even attending their weekly prayer meetings it seems that there is no place exempt from violence. But in these moments when everything seems to be closing in, we have to remind ourselves that Jesus never promised peace on earth, for now…BUT

Because Jesus went to the cross, true peace is always possible – Thank God it is never too late! Peace is not the absence of war, though we would wish it so. Peace is the presence of the dove of peace ruling in our hearts no matter what comes.

Peace

The best part of being at the beach this afternoon, was not jumping in the water to cool off, but feeling the breeze quiet my heart and mind. It has always intrigued me how Jesus never said that the world did not offer peace. He only said that the peace He gives is different (and way better) than what this world can offer us.

It’s not that the peace we can find on this earth is always bad, but rather it is always temporary. We had to come home from the beach, tomorrow we go to the doctor and then come blood tests and then come bills and on and on. The peace that calmed my heart for a moment at the shore will be forgotten but God’s peace rests on the unchanging truth of His word. His promise of life, forgiveness and rest for my soul stretch on past the horizon of eternity. Peace more sure than a river and broader than all oceans is available any time and any place in the person of Jesus Christ.
