2018 Devotional

Every time the sun comes up and each day that God gives us is another in a chain of miracles. What we choose to do with the journey given us depends a great deal on who we choose to follow each and every day. This full year of short devotional meditations, scriptures and photographs can be one part of what God uses to help you along the road that lies ahead!

I had set a goal at the beginning of 2017 to write a full 365 day devotional. I thought it would be a bit of work but but had no idea just how long writing and editing over 100,000 words could be! The challenge of the countless hours, frustrations have been both a time of learning and growth. I pray that for you “365 Days with Jesus” will be a blessing in your coming year. Now available on Amazon in e-book or soft cover. Also available in the other e-formats on Smashwords.com.

The Name of Jesus -Part 1

And she will have a son and you are to name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins Matthew 1:32

“Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her,” for you have found favor with God.”  You will conceive and give birth to a son and you will name him Jesus.” Luke 1:30-31

When God gave the name Jesus it is interesting to see that he spoke both to Joseph and to Mary. To Mary Gabriel explained all that Jesus would do as the Messiah, but to Joseph God defined the name. The name Jesus was given because God had given His Son, not only to teach us the ways of Heaven, heal our sickness, or give us a comfortable life; Jesus came to save His people from their sins.
One of the most beautiful sounds in the entire world to each of us is the sound of our own name. We love to hear our name mentioned especially if it is linked with assurance, love or praise. The sound I want most to hear as I cross into eternity is my own name being called by God himself with the phrase “Well done good and faithful servant” Our name is what calls our attention at any moment.
Imagine Jesus entering the world cradled in Mary’s arms. One of the first words Mary and Joseph would say was, “Jesus!”  God had kept His promise to them just as He said. From that day forward every time Jesus heard His own name it would be a reminder of why He had come. When He was growing up in the home with His brothers and Mary called out, “Jesus” he would remember that he was different. God had sent Him not just to be born in the humble stable, but also one day to give His life as a sacrifice for us!

Re-gifting!

Because Corinth was a wealthy city filled with business activity it possibly compares most closely to our modern Western church than any of the others. The Corinthians were opinionated, trendy and fell easily for some of the attractions of the world around them. But these people who struggled with more issues than most of the other churches combined also held a special place in the heart of the Apostle. He not only devoted two of his longest letters to them, he also visited them often and built a father/son relationship with many of them. When Paul corrects he tells them he did so with tears and concern. In his first letter one of the issues he addressed was their pride. There were brothers and sisters in their church who began to act as if they were better than others. They got their noses a bit up into the air because they felt they were more talented more wealthy and more gifted by God. Paul finds himself forced to remind these people that they shouldn’t consider themselves as the source of their gifts. Rather than being self-sufficient they were instead supposed to remember that anything they had to give had first been given to them.

Whenever the subject of re-gifting comes up at the holidays, I find myself torn. On one side of the debate are those who say “What a cheap skate!” and on the other “Why buy things that people don’t need with money we don’t have?” The Apostle Paul enters into a debate just to remind us that there is nothing that we have or ever will that originated with us. We are in fact simply recipients of so much that we can do nothing else as God’s children but to give to others what has been given first to us! So don’t be ashamed to be a re-gifter! Tell your friends and family this Christmas. I am just giving a little to you of the many things that I already received!
