What Does the Bible say about voting?

p1010923

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—  for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.  This is good, and pleases God our Savior 1 Timothy 2:1-3

I am truly thankful for the freedom and peace we enjoy in the United States yet I often find myself in cojuly-2012-006nflict over the issues surrounding our current political process. I face struggles to reconcile my faith with the differing political ideas within my own family and church.

First, the Bible gives us no example of democracy anywhere within its 4,000 plus year history. Joseph would be scratching his head if you asked him which  party he thought would give  them the best nominee for Pharaoh. Daniel similarly would have had no advice as to who he was voting for, for the next king of Persia. In New Testament times we find that John the Baptist was more concerned about Herod’s choice of wife than about taxes. The Apostle Paul’s appearance before Caesar in a highly political and grossly unfair trial drew no complaints about the corruption of the government or its forays into wars of conquest. But in spite of the absence of direct advice on voting, we can find a common theme that each of these men gave us in dealing with the ruling authorities of their day. The principles which they each maintained were a personal faith,  an unwavering trust in God as the sovereign authority over every king, and a personal responsibility to pray. Today let’s examine the last – Our personal responsibility to pray

Daniel we are told not only prayed three times daily for his nation but he did it so consistently that it became general public knowledge. Paul tells us we ought to pray without ceasing and John the Baptist was known for having taught his disciples to pray.

Can we take a little test to see how we are doing?

Can we remember the last time you prayed for our president and his family?

Have we ever prayed for the leaders of nations we consider our enemies?

Can we point to prayer time we have devoted to one of the hot button issues of this election?

If Jesus came to live in my neighborhood what would be his most urgent prayer?

I would love to hear what your prayers have been or would be. Please feel welcome to react and tell us what you think!

We can do nothing until we have prayed but when we pray it will be impossible for us do nothing!

Into the Light

2 Peter 2:9. But you are a chosen people,a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light!

We heard the scratching sounds coming from just outside the tent. We fearfully listened wondering what terrible beast could be there for a minute or so. Finally I opened the tent flap and shone the flashlight in the direction of the noise. There frozen for a moment was the cutest face of an adorable thieving raccoon. Realizing that the gig was up he scampered off to the safety of the dark woods.

Just as our raccoon ran away so we sometimes run from instead of to the light because we forget what we are created for. God’s light isn’t just shining so he can catch us in our sin. God is calling us out of our dark selfish world into His. In our world we are nobody but in his we are a chosen people. In our minds we feel unclean like the lepers of  Bible days, but in him we are a holy nation. We are told daily that we have value only if we succeed, but God calls us a special possession. But all of these gifts are given not so we can hide them in the corner but that we can tell others about His wonderful light!

Whiter than Snow

Purge me with hyysop and I will be clean. Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow Psalm 51:7

Here at the tag end of summer even the concept of the first snow seems unreal. But God gently prepares us for that experience. First will come the bright reds and pinks of the maple leaves. Then the tomato plants will cease their harvest. Finally the frost will pass through like a silent thief and steal the last blush from the Rose. Then gray skies, cold winds and brown grass will be all that remain of the summer’s  memories. That is the moment when the blessed first snow comes to gently cover the hills with it’s white winter blanket.

David reminds us in Psalm 51 that the sweet but temporary snow is nothing compared to the purest of whites found only in God’s mercy. When just as David did, we cry to our heavenly Father for forgiveness He sends a cleansing agent that does more than simply give us a fragile whiteness that can be blown away or melted in an hour. God sent us His only Son to die in our place. That Innocent blood alone has the power to wash me and make me forever whiter than snow!
