Good Enough for Joseph

But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 1:20 KJV

During the Christmas season a great deal is said and sung about Mary, but precious little about Joseph. Though Mary received a visit from the angel Gabriel, Joseph had only a dream. While Mary treasured the circumstances of the shepherds and wise men in her heart, Joseph had to pack their bags and guide them safely to Egypt. Later, after they returned to Nazareth, Joseph may have wondered how that dream from God would be fulfilled, when all he could do was continue his daily work as a carpenter. Years passed, James and Jude were born to Joseph and Mary as well as at least two daughters, and life must have seemed anything but miraculous. No fulfillment of God’s promise, no miracles, or change of any kind appeared during Joseph’s lifetime and yet he remained faithful. He woke up every morning, said his prayers, went to work, paid the bills, and quietly finished his days in the tiny village of Nazareth.

Mary saw the miracles, but Joseph only saw the character of Jesus. Mary met the disciples, and her two sons later became church leaders, but Joseph only went to synagogue and worshipped with people who never believed that Jesus was from God. Joseph waited an entire lifetime, believing in God’s promises, and then closed his eyes, without seeing them. I wonder what things Joseph hoped for, what plans he deferred or what public opposition he faced as he simply obeyed God’s commands to take Mary as his wife and then faithfully cared for her all his life. Joseph waited on a promise, that was not fulfilled in his lifetime, trusted in a plan that only others would experience and believed in God’s goodness without wavering to the end. Joseph did not know what rewards awaited Him in heaven but being one small part of God’s big plan was enough for him. Today, our society pushes us to work for important positions, shiny possessions, and exciting pleasures, but God simply asks us to trust Him as Joseph did. We also may never see beyond the borders of our village, our small town, or our city neighborhood, but that was enough for Joseph, that was enough for God: so, why shouldn’t it be enough for you and me?

Daniel Still Prayed

When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously. Daniel 6:10 ESV

Unless you have been living in a cave for the last two years, you know that there is an important election tomorrow. Whatever the outcome, there will be a lot of unhappy people on Wednesday morning. As I thought over the various outcomes for both the presidency as well as both houses of Congress I was drawn to this verse from Daniel and have been encouraged by his example. When Daniel woke up the morning after the election, he found out that his party was the loser. His prayer life had been declared illegal, and there were deadly consequences for him if he continued to pray. But none of these facts seemed to bother Daniel. When he learned the news, he didn’t kick the cat, throw the coffee pot or run over to his neighbors to complain. Instead, the Bible tells us that Daniel woke up, had his morning coffee, opened his window, just as he always did and got down on his knees to pray! No that’s an example worth following!

When I get so drawn into the political and social storms that are raging all around, I need to remind myself that not every day will be sunny, and the roses cannot always be in bloom. Being faithful to Christ will rarely be applauded by the world we live in, and that only when we follow Jesus, can we discover that his grace and strength can carry us through whatever lies ahead. So, this morning I pray that each one of us can keep Daniel’s perspective. Pray for our nation, we certainly need it! Trust that whatever the outcome, God remains the ruler of the universe: His term will never expire, and He loved us enough to send His one and only Son, to suffer and die for our sins. Now that is good news worth living for, and it is also good news worth dying for!

Who is on Guard Duty?

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 NIV

A few days ago, the verse of the day in my Bible app was the one from Proverbs that told us to guard our hearts. It was great advice, but my problem is that I am not always great at guard duty. Sometimes I am distracted by temporary problems, get embroiled in controversies with the other guards or have days when I just feel like being lazy. That is why I was encouraged by these words of Paul to in the church in Philippi. After several chapters dealing with the hot topics of the day, he gives some fatherly advice to his friends telling them that they could bring all their problems and anxieties to God in prayer. But they must also remember to give God thanks in advance and trust Him for the answer.

I am so happy to learn that it isn’t just by my being vigilant or adhering to a strict set of rules that my heart is protected. I am guarded by asking God for help. Now, I don’t know about you, but God is definitely a better guard than me! I fall asleep about ten o’clock every night, but God stays awake 24/7. God never sleeps so that we can. He never fails, though we do so often. God is always faithful, loving kind and powerful, so why should we ever doubt Him? Let’s start today by giving Him thanks for His help in our crisis, His mercy to forgive our sins and most of all for His sacrifice of His only Son Jesus, so that His peace could guard our hearts and minds today!
