Home Repairs

So let no one boast in men. For all things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours, and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s. 1 Corinthians 3:21-23 ESV

I have taken the last two weeks off from writing on this blog hoping to find a bit of quietness. Well, to tell the truth, during that time, nothing has been very quiet here in our home. Our new adventure in home repairs began with a leaking shower, leading to a mildewed carpet (which was nearly new) and voila! – unscheduled (and expensive) repairs going on all around us. And instead dealing with things as I should with calm assurance, I allowed frustration, and general grumpiness to get a toehold in my attitude. But this morning God reminded me of a time years ago when Nancy and I were still renters. We and our two small boys lived in a nice upstairs apartment in a two-family home, with our landlord in the downstairs unit. When we wanted to paint a room, Mike, bought us the paint. If the furnace stopped working, Mike had it repaired. When the taxes came due, they went into Mike’s mailbox, not mine. For twelve years, all we had to do was pay the rent and call Mike when things went wrong. Our relationship with God has some great similarities. Earlier in this chapter, the Apostle Paul reminds us that we are God’s temple. He is the landlord and the deed to our souls belongs to Jesus. Today’s verse lets us know that He is the owner of both our present and our future, so we no longer have to have all the answers to life’s problems. The pressure is not only off of us because God is our landlord but better than that, He is not just living in the downstairs apartment. He is living in us and whatever happens to us matters to Him and is His responsibility to fix. But before you or I can count on God’s help to get things fixed, we have to be sure that the deed to our soul is His. Just as one part of buying a home, is to check if the title is unencumbered, by debts, the only way for us to belong exclusively to God is to be sure we have sold out 100% to Jesus. When His name is on the deed to our heart, then today’s verse tells us that, both our present situation and future circumstances are in His hands. Then we can rest, even while building repairs are going on around us. We can have that blessed assurance because all we have is Christ’s, and Christ belongs to God, and with God in charge of building maintenance, He will make sure that everything works out both for our good and His glory!

Spiritual Dream Home

But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison whatever they did there it was his doing.              Genesis 39:21-22

My wife and I are somewhat addicted to HGTV home remodeling shows. We enjoy watching while either the Property Brothers; Rick and Joanna Gaines or Hillary Farr rip to shreds and then rebuild old worn out houses and make them into someone’s dream home!  Have you ever noticed that construction zones and demolition zones seem very much alike? Maybe that’s because both involve some smashing down and some digging up that are equally painful. Recently we experienced lots of digging up, filling in and then digging up and filling in again of several large pipes under our street. The issues were complex and the rerouting didn’t work the first second or even third time. One night they were smashing and pounding till 11 o’clock. My response to waking up to the racket was to put my jacket on over my pj’s and march indignantly down the street to complain.

The tired foreman of the job took off his hardhat and politely answered that they couldn’t wait to go home either but they had to finish before they were allowed to quit. Sheepishly I went home realizing that I was not the only one who wished the work was done.  In Joseph’s life he also passed through a construction zone when he was unjustly thrown into prison.  Unlike me, Joseph was patient and continued to listen rather than complain. The heavy construction that God was doing in his life became a season of blessing and growth because Joseph chose to listen.

On those occasions where I have followed Joseph’s example and tuned my ears to listen I have discovered as he did that it is God who is at work digging and pounding and He won’t stop till He has finished! God’s promises are real. He hasn’t abandoned us or forgotten the dream which He sent. In fact the painful circumstances which we are in today are what God is using to build the spiritual dream home which He has prepared for us in eternity!

Preparing a Home for Jesus

Behold I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him; and he with Me. Revelation 3:20 ESV

When we Christians think of heaven we generally focus on how Jesus has a place prepared for us there. But heaven is not just some geographical place we go to live; it is God coming to live with us. So how can we prepare a place for Him? The good news is that we can’t; but Jesus can!

Now it isn’t exactly like what happened when we had some remodeling done in our kitchen but it does share some certain points. First; we needed to realize that the repairs needed were more than we could handle. That is what Jesus meant when He said, “If any man hears my voice and opens the door.”

KIMG1580Our job was to open the door when our contractors showed up. Imagine if instead of letting the kitchen installers in, we just started hammering away ourselves. That is what we do when we leave Jesus outside our door. He has everything necessary to remodel our hearts but first we have to let Him in.

On the other hand; unlike our project; Jesus doesn’t just plan on showing up, doing his work and going home. Jesus said that He wanted to come in, sit down and stay. His plan begins by demolishing our old life along with our sins on the cross. Then He follows up with all the changes and new materials needed being installed through His resurrection. When He has finished His job we will discover that Heaven is simply where He sits down at our kitchen table and enjoys a meal with us forever in that place inside of us which only He can prepare!
