Don’t Give Up!

Returning to Life Care Center, to sing for the folks yesterday was a wonderful experience. It was also an amazing blessing to know that this year, in my absence several other people stepped in to keep the services going. It reminded me of lessons that I had taught but rarely experienced that nursing home ministry must not be a solo effort. Instead, as a church we are supposed to be “Team Jesus” and His work, and His message should be advanced even when one teammate has to sit on the bench for a while.

Teamwork makes the dream work, as they say, but mustering a team, has not been a quick process. Connecting our nursing home outreach to the leadership in our churches is essential if we are to make any serious progress. Years ago, we attended a large church that took nursing home ministry so seriously that they put together four or five teams of us and sent us all around our city to conduct services during Sunday School hour.

Sadly, that experience was not what we have seen elsewhere. Over the years, I have found that few churches are interested in investing time and resources in nursing home ministry. But if this is also your situation, don’t give up on your church. It will take a concerted effort, without getting discouraged or bitter to attract the leadership’s attention. Remember that they may already be overwhelmed with so many other tasks that it is hard for them to see the importance of serving nursing home residents. Yet in the Bible it is clear that God cares especially for widows and orphans, and He calls you and me to care for them. There is no one simple formula, no recipe or secret key, to getting more people involved, just be lovingly persistent. Don’t faint, because as you keep serving with all your heart, God has promised that there is a wonderful harvest of souls, precious to Jesus, who are just waiting to be reached within nursing homes and assisted living facilities all over our nation!

God’s Love in the Nitty-Gritty of Nursing Homes

I have rarely (Okay maybe never) shared an actual message from the nursing home. This week I am making an exception because I am hoping that the content give a helpful peek behind the curtain of life in long-term care. Some of the story is raw, because the problems, the struggles and the hurts are real, but God offers a sacrifice that came at a cost far more graphic and terrible because of His love! Each week we have 30 precious minutes, to sing, to pray, to preach and to visit. May this testimony be an encouragement and a blessing to any of you who dares to share the hope and grace of Jesus in a long-term care facility in your own community.

Preparing for the AI Storm

There is a storm coming called artificial intelligence, the likes of which we have never seen. It is hard for us to even imagine the power of this new force that is no longer coming, it is here and growing more powerful daily. Whether on the topic of medicine, or national defense, AI is viewed as a tool to be used, and an uncommon urgency seems to have gripped our society to develop it as fast as possible. It makes me wonder if anyone stopped to ask why, and what will be the outcome of turning those segments of our society over to this brand-new force. We are either at the point now or soon will be that some AI model somewhere will know the names and personal information of virtually every single person on our planet. They will or are in the process of consuming all our works of literature, art, and theater. Every star, every discovery, every medicine will be part of its database. Even every state secret, every weapon system, and the internal structure of every unit in our military is only just beyond its reach but only for now. How should we prepare? How should we as Christians think about how AI will affect us and the work of the Gospel of Jesus Christ? There has never been an adversary like the one we are facing. Yet, no matter what lies ahead, we need to remember that there is still no one like our God. There will never be any power greater than His. If He is on our side, who can be against us? So, let’s prepare, but not fear, plan but not panic and keep walking by faith because with the strength that only Jesus gives, He has promised that we will not faint! This week we sang, “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus” The message that Helen Lemmel wrote about trusting God in confusing and difficult circumstances is never more true than now. When we don’t know what to do next, who to trust or where to turn, we must turn our eyes of faith towards Jesus, and then “The things that are of earth grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace!”
