Breaking News!

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has anointed me to proclaim Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, and to set at liberty those who are oppressed. " Luke 4:18 ESV

Whether you turn on the CBS Evening news, The Fox Report or CNN news, it is likely that the headlines are all bad news stories. As the old saying goes, “If it bleeds it leads.” With unimaginable cruelty, unending wars and merciless natural disasters pummeling our airwaves, it is easy to suppose that things have never been so bad. But with the slaughter of worshippers in the temple by Pilate, multitudes of blind, crippled and lepers begging in the streets and the hypocrisy of the religious leaders, in the days of Jesus, it seems that things weren’t really all that much different back then. So, you might think that in His first sermon, Jesus should have denounced the Roman atrocities, demanded fair treatment of slaves or condemned the religious charlatans who held power in Jerusalem. But instead, Jesus went to the ancient prophetic writings of Isaiah and announced to everyone longing for better things, that He had come to proclaim God’s Good News, and that this news was especially for the poor. Why the poor? Were they any more deserving of this message than anyone else? No! Rather this good news for them was like a home cooked meal to a starving man, a storm shelter in a tornado or a Spring thaw after many subzero weeks of Winter.

Sharing this message of Good News with the precious residents of Discovery Villages this past Sunday was a real blessing. I found that God’s word didn’t need to be hyped up, twisted into modern relevancy or updated, for it to bring hope to their hungry hearts. If you are also thirsty for that same good news of Jesus, then I pray that this little message will lift you up today.

I Love to Tell the Story

He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.”
Matthew 28:6-7 ESV

Whenever we turn on the news our television stations are filled with stories of snowstorms, tornados, terrorist attacks and sporting events. Then when we open our mailboxes, we find them filled with appeals to buy an unending array of products, sell our homes or give money to hundreds of worthy causes. It seems that everyone wants our money, our time or our attention. Now if our house is on fire, bombs are about to drop or a disaster strikes our neighbors, we indeed should and must act. But even in the greatest those emergencies, we must not allow the urgency of our situation to drown out the most important story of all. “Jesus has risen, and He wants to meet with us!”

Just stop and think about that amazing detail for a moment! The One who governs the course of galaxies and who lives in heaven surrounded by angels, wants to be a part of our lives! Why not give Him our unwavering attention and listen to what He has to say before the morning news? Only He can help us to face our emergencies, and only His hope can give us the courage to help others. Just like the disciples in today’s verse, He will show us what direction to take and promises that He will go before us. As we put our trust in Him, and give Him our heart’s undivided attention, we will discover that He is going with us into the New Year and that there we will see Him, no matter what lies ahead!

Author of Salvation

He isn’t just the author of our salvation He is also the editor of every jot and tiddle. He isn’t just the editor He is also the literary agent in the person of the Holy Spirit who reveals Him to hungry hearts. All God is looking for are newspaper boys and girls who will put the good news of Jesus Christ on the door steps of everyone on route!

And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,
