A Sabbath Day’s Flight

I have always been delighted to watch birds in flight. The effortless way they spread their wings reminds me of the way God intends for us to rest in His grace. Just as birds are made for flight (Minus the Ostrich and his cousins) God intends for us to rise up by faith into the air and show off the inner beauty of Christ who lies hidden as long as we walk on the ground with our faith wings folded. And what speaks more clearly of grace than God’s Holy Sabbath? The Sabbath is a weekly reminder that on the morning when Adam and Eve rose from their first night’s sleep, God gave to them a day, and He blessed it, and called it Holy!

So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. - Genesis 2:3 ESV
And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
Mark 2:27 ESV
For whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.
Hebrews 4:10 ESV

Flying Lessons

The hummingbird was sleeping in
When mother shook his wing
Wake up John it’s time for class
I heard the school bell ring!

He opened first one tiny eye
Then peeked out of the nest
He knew the day for flying lessons
What was his mom planned next

So out the door with trembling heart
John’s wings began to beat
Then up into the wind He flew
To lessons down the street!

But this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind,
and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 3:13-14 KJV

Thank you to everyone who seemed to enjoy the two recent poems I posted here this week! I was genuinely surprised and grateful for the many kind comments and for those who shared the posts. Honestly, I have never been able to write much on a schedule or by demand, but I do try to pass on in the moment the lessons God is teaching me – sometimes in verse. This morning’s poem was one I wrote for the younger crowd. I wish I had Gary’s acumen with a camera to share my own hummingbird photos, but I did my best with what stock pics I could find. Flying Lessons was part of the children’s section in a collection of poems which I published this Summer titled, The Road That Leads to Home. (There are three sections for the adults). If anyone is interested, this collection is available in both softcover and eBook on Amazon. You could search it out by title for yourself of follow the link. Have a blessed day everyone!

Going Back to School

While we New Englanders have enjoyed Labor Day weekend as our final summer family fling, here in Florida and much of the South, the kids are gearing up for school in early August. Either way, the pinch of new shoes, finding our seat in homeroom and the weight of Algebra books are an inevitable destiny. This morning that idea of going back to school reminded me of a poem I wrote a while back that encourages us to remember that no matter how old we are, God has some new lessons for us to learn today.
