Today’s Service

In my quiet time this morning it was as if God held up a mirror to show me how little I valued those moments compared to Him. Yes I lingered for a brief prayer and spent time in His word; but all the while the wheels of my mind were sprinting ahead towards my future plans. Yet as the apostle Peter points out to us –

But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 2 Peter 3:8

We all too often lose the value and purpose of the moment of prayer and quiet because the hurry within our hearts drowns out the still small voice of God. We demean the intimate contentment with the Lord Jesus as if something later in the day or tomorrow or next year has more value in His eyes.

But God delights in the moment. He rests in it as Jesus rested by the well. He has no sense of hurry or fearful anxiety of urgency.

He is never forced into action in a crisis. He rests in the moment like a butterfly who happily enjoys each flower without wishing He could hurry on to the next. He is not only the way and the truth – He is also like the clock of life itself and all time stands still in His presence. There is neither tomorrow nor yesterday with Him. He is the Great I Am! Whatever humble word, shy smile or simple sacrifice Jesus gives us for today is more precious to Him than any act of service we are planning for the future. The God who knows the beginning from the end also knows our hearts. If we will simply walk with Him by faith in this moment, His promise is that He will walk with us all down through the corridors of eternity!

The Middle of Things

But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.  Matthew 14:24

As we reach the half way point of my wife’s chemotherapy the phrase – midst of the sea – is a pretty good description of where we are. “The midst of the sea” is that place where it is impossible to look back and see where we started, but not far enough along to see where we are going. “Has God not been with us every step of the way?” Oh Yes He has! – but there are days and hours that the endless horizon wears on our hopes.

At the monthly missions banquet I fell into conversation with one lady who had been involved in Christian broadcasts in China. She remarked to me that while the Bible is the best seller in the world each year, she wondered how many really read it. “Oh I read my Bible every day!” I exclaimed “”But that is because you are a pastor.” She replied. “Oh no it is the other way around.” I said. The Bible is my hope. That is what keeps me connected I need to read my Bible!”

I don’t know if she believed me but that conversation clarified in my own mind just where I am on my journey. The promises of God are much more precious now than at the beginnings of my faith. They are what keeps me from despair and guides me across that “midst of the sea” Jesus has left us His promises in His word. His word is a guardian angel – always present when we open its pages. It is the water of life when we long for a drop of cool water in the desert places of our hearts. It is the compass that points to the true north of God’s destination on the other side. Thank God that here in the midst of things He comes anSailboatd says, “Don’t be afraid, it is I !”

God’s Master Plan

Our hope in Jesus Christ through every difficulty is that He works all things together for good. Sometimes God’s master plan is that our sufferings today will be the seed of His grace in the lives of others tomorrow. And in everything it will always be forever for our good!

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose    Romans 8:28
