Having a child throw a tantrum in a restaurant is every father or mother’s worst nightmare. People stare, they wonder out loud about your parenting ability. We blush and sweat and rack our brains about what to do, because right then our kid is just making us crazy! But did you ever stop to think that there are days when we act just like that with God. We misbehave, talk back, complain and fuss and sometimes even complain at the top of our lungs to anyone who will listen. But just as any parent who truly loves their child, God doesn’t abandon us in the restaurant. Instead in those moments when we are at our worst, though God will correct us, He still claims us as His own. Now that kind of love and grace is something that makes me say, “He has made me glad, yes He has made me glad!” I hope you enjoy my memorable story and join in us singing this joyful chorus by Leona Bruce Von Brethorst. No matter what we face, what failures we are in the middle of or how far we feel from God, we can still turn back and “Enter His gates, with thanksgiving in our hearts,” because by grace God still claims us as His child!
This Little Light
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Matthew 5:15 KJV
One of my favorite old-time songs from church is “This Little Light of Mine. It reminds me of when our boys were small, and we lived in a tiny second floor apartment. One night my wife thought she heard a sound coming from the children’s room, and since our flashlight was buried somewhere in a kitchen drawer, she carefully worked her way through the dark in that direction. I half woke up as she got out of bed, but when I heard her voice suddenly pierce the night with “Oh! Oh!” she had my undivided attention.
“What’s going on?” I shouted sitting bolt upright, ready to rush to her rescue. By this time though the startled little scream had been replaced by peals of laughter. “You wouldn’t believe it!” Nancy said as she quickly slipped back into our bedroom. “I was standing in the middle of the kitchen, when a firefly lit up no more than an inch in front of by nose!” That tiny bug had everyone’s attention, not because of how impressive the candlepower of his light was, but because he chose the darkest place to shine it. With all the problems going on in the world around us we can easily get discouraged and feel like our little light won’t make much of a difference. But it just may be that God has called you to give just a little flash of His love to someone on the darkest night of their life!
Singing With Virginia
O Sing unto to the Lord a new song; sing unto the Lord, all the earth. Psalm 96:1 KJV
A few years ago, I had been praying for God to open doors at the long-term care facilities I visit, but I wasn’t prepared to see them swing open quite so wide. One morning I arrived at the memory-care ward of a local facility and found about a dozen folks seated in the TV area by the nurse’s station. They seemed happy to see me and as I took out my guitar and started singing “Put Your Hand in the Hand of the Man who stilled the waters!”, I noticed behind one lady pacing aimlessly back and forth hunched over her walker. I paid little attention to her until she suddenly started shuffling in our direction. Being concerned that she might fall, one of the nurses jumped up and gently redirected her back to the hall. But just a minute later she was back, and this time walked right up to me and stood quietly for a moment, then reached out her finger and touched the strings of my guitar. Curious to see what she would do; I assured the nurse that it was fine. “What’s her name?” I asked the nurse. “Oh, that’s Virginia.” She called back. I had not been able to see Virginia’s face because she was so completely bent over her walker but when she heard her name she looked up and smiled. Then as we started the next hymn Virginia began to sing. Her face lit up as our voices joined together, “Jesus – Jesus – Jesus – Sweetest name I know. Hears every longing of my heart – Keeps me singing as I go!” Oh yes doors began opening today but the one that swung the widest was the one to my heart. Virginia reminded all of us that everyone on earth can sing a new song for you!
