The Good Shepherd’s Staff

The Lord is my Shepherd into deep valleys green
He leads with His staff by a quiet soft stream
But when sin beckons, He tells me to walk
On the straight narrow way through the cleft in the rock

And through the valley of shadows and tears
His rod and His staff comfort all of my fears
When my enemies set up an ambush ahead
He shows me a table where His banquet is spread

Then If I stop to worry about things left undone
His goodness and mercy lead me farther along
With His cross ever guiding like a good shepherd’s staff
We will come to His house when our journey is past!

He Safely Carries His Lambs

Are you a staff for the Shepherd to lean on
A yielded heart to His plans for today?
A calendar filled with appointments
On His schedule and choice for your way?

For His burden grows lighter and lighter
And His yoke is a joy to receive
When He gathers the weak and the lowly
To follow and simply believe

Through trials and troubles He leads us
His voice rings more clearly each day
Though dark paths and steep valleys lie just up ahead
He safely carries His lambs all the way!

He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. Isaiah 40:11 KJV

Jesus Our Shepherd

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23:6 ESV

We are nearing the six-month mark of a life that is completely different from anything we have known before. No plan, no relationship and no expectation has gone untouched. Churches have services online; large companies battle just to stay afloat, and the doors have been closed to family and visitors of long-term care facilities. But through everything you may have been through this year Jesus remains the Good Shepherd for anyone who comes to Him.

What exactly is a good shepherd? An ordinary shepherd is just the one who owns sheep, but a good shepherd is someone who cares about them. An ordinary shepherd drives his sheep where he wants them to go; but a good shepherd goes ahead of them to make sure the way is safe. Jesus told us that He is the good shepherd and that to make the way safe for us He gave His life. If we follow Him; He promises to walk ahead of us through everything that lies ahead. Why would we put our trust in anyone else? Only Jesus has given His life. Why not make Him our Good Shepherd today?
