Thursday Morning – Between Hope and Peace

As a brief explanation to my readers: our lives, least of which my writing schedule have been entirely unscheduled over the last 3-4 days as we made arrangements to travel to the West Coast for my wife Nancy’s sister’s funeral. Added to that was my decision to get the third booter, which boosted me into chills, and aches and pains for 36 hours. But this morning I woke with peace, not only physically, but also spiritually to find this Thursday morning sunshine edition falling between the Sundays of hope and peace, and I chose our peace edition to share with you. I pray you will be blessed with the excellent articles by Pastor Janice Burnett and my friend Rob Keller, and that the amazing peace of Jesus will carry you through whatever you are facing this week. Sunshine Newsletter is a free devotional newsletter which is distributed in 8-9 long term care facilities in New York and Florida. Sunshine is produced by Pastor Janice Burnett who serves as a chaplain in Western New York, Rob Keller, my friend and our graphic artist and myself. Who Will You Tell? By Rob Keller

And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. Luke 2:17-18 ESV

Did you make your own greeting cards? When I was in art school, I began designing and printing my own Christmas cards. Forty-some-odd years later, I continue that tradition. Looking back over the years, there are a select few that I am quite happy with, but I can see now that some of my designs were pretty awful. I always found it very difficult to come up with a truly original idea.

It seemed like all of the words and images I could think of had been used a million times before. Somewhere along the way, I realized that I didn’t need to say something that had never been said before and the images used so often capture the essence of Christmas. It is not my job to reinvent the Christmas story, I am here to simply celebrate and share the good news of our Savior’s birth. The story of Christmas doesn’t need to be updated; it is timeless. It doesn’t need to be embellished. In its simplicity, it is majestic. The details of Jesus’ birth do not need to be defended against scoffers, that truth stands rock solid, without our help. There is nothing we can do to improve the Gospel. The power of Jesus’ birth, life, death, and resurrection has transformed countless lives over the centuries. The message of Christmas doesn’t need a makeover; it is a treasure to be passed, from generation to generation and from one heart to another. How will you pass it on this year? Who will you tell today?

Grace That Amazed!
As we put up our tree and on top place the star
That tells of the wise men and kings
Who knelt and rejoiced in the stable that night
And gave their myrrh, Frankincense and gold rings
Take a moment to pray with a heart full of praise
For on Christmas there came
A grace that amazed!

Second Advent Sunday – Peace by Pastor Janice Burnett

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:14

A journey usually takes lot of preparation. I don’t know about you, but when I’ve gone to visit family members who live in another part of the country, there have been many things that I’ve needed to get ready for that trip. Or, maybe for you the preparation has not been for a visit, but for a move from one place to another. Whether you have lived in just one place or several, any move requires preparation, and that preparation can bring stress– both physical and mental. Now, whether we are going on a trip or moving, we should remember to give plenty of notice because surprises can be nice, but, not everyone likes them. Imagine just showing up and saying – “here we are! We hope you have room for us?!” Now imagine what it was like for Mary and Joseph. Here they were – uninvited guests and one of them was a young lady about to give birth! Yikes!!! That’s exactly what it was like two thousand years ago when they arrived in Bethlehem. God had been telling the people of Israel ahead of time that their Savior would come.  They were watching and waiting for Him – but they had their own ideas how that would happen! In the meantime, they were not exactly getting along with each other or those who were their rulers. We call that lack of peace. And on the inside, they didn’t have peace. Most importantly they didn’t have peace with God. So, listen to how the angels announced Jesus’ birth to the shepherds!

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Luke 2:8-12 ESV

The peace that the angels spoke about is available to every person here on earth who puts their trust in God and that includes you and me! In the midst of trouble and the storms of life, we can have peace. As we experience sickness, separation from loved ones and questions about life, God assures us that His peace is available to us.

Prayer: Father God, in the middle of this world of chaos I thank you for loving us enough to send your Son Jesus who as Savior and our Prince of Peace!

Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love Saint Francis

Giving Thanks by Peter Caligiuri

Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:20 ESV In today’s verse the Apostle Paul tells us to be thankful for everything. Now without a doubt there were plenty of terrible things going on in the world in Paul’s day just as there are in ours. But the thankfulness Paul talks about is more than simply recalling the good things we have experienced. Instead, the gratitude that God has in mind is about seeing things as He sees them. We may see the potholes in the road but God sees the whole journey. We feel the cold of the winter wind while God sees the trees resting while they gather their energy for spring. We are angry over hurtful words spoken to us while God is giving us an opportunity to learn to forgive. We experienced the loneliness of the Covid-19 lockdown, but God was giving us time to remember what and who matter most in life. If we are able to see all of our family again this year, will we remember to tell them we love them and hold them close? But whether we are together or apart from our loved ones, the biggest blessing is that Jesus has promised to sit with us! God is good. We have much to be thankful for!

Giving thanks when things go well
Is an easy thing to do
But giving thanks when the chips are down
Is God’s will for me and you!
Yes, give thanks for ‘all things’ for, as it has been well said ‘Our disappointments are but His appointments.’” –A.W. Pink

Riddles in Heaven? By Rob Keller

Do you like riddles? Here’s one I thought was pretty clever: What runs around the yard day and night, but never moves or never gets tired? Give up? Well, you’ll have to keep reading to get the answer. Ready for another one? What has a beginning, but no end? To find the answer, just look in the mirror. If you are a Christian It’s you! The moment you received Jesus as your Savior, you were born into God’s family and began a life that will never end. Yes, some day we will leave this world behind and find ourselves frolicking on Heaven’s streets of gold, but that isn’t when eternal life begins. It starts right here and now. That’s because the eternal life that God gives us is not just about how long we live, but it’s also about how well we live. Now that our sins are forgiven, we can live in a close relationship with God. We have the privilege of talking with our Him (That’s prayer). Jesus calls us his friends. In God’s kingdom, our lives now have meaning and purpose. This new life fills us with deep peace and joy, no matter our circumstances. These are just a few of the blessings we are given as a “down payment”, of the full inheritance we will have in Heaven.

In Heaven, where we will live forever, we will receive bodies that will never grow old, get sick or die. There will be no pain or sorrow. We will join multitudes of believers worshipping around God’s throne. We will be reunited with beloved friends and family and gather around a table to share the most amazing banquet ever. God’s word gives us only little glimpses of what eternity will be like, but remember, it can start right here and now.

Did you figure out the first riddle yet? The answer is a fence! It runs around the yard, but never moves or gets tired. Life can be full of riddles but when we get to heaven every one will be answered at the feet of Jesus Christ!

The Lighter Side With Sue Hyson

The phone rings at the church parish, “Hello, is this Father O’Malley?”
“Yes it is.” The priest replied
“This is the IRS calling. Do you have a parishioner named Ted Houlihan?
“Well yes, Ted is a member of our congregation.”
“Did Mr. Houlihan donate $10,000 to the church?”
Father O’Malley thought for a moment and then replied, “He will!”

Sharing Christ at Nursing Homes in 21

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

Yesterday I shared a little about preparing a Christmas outreach into Senior Living communities in your own town. Today I’ll be presenting some practical suggestions that you can use, or re-configure to fit your own situation. Most importantly is that we try to find ways to carry the love of Christ into facilities that are just beginning to open again. Why shouldn’t Christians be the first ones in the door willing to bringing tidings of comfort and joy. this Christmas?

We need to think about how the same old goals of nursing home ministry can be done in brand new ways. When Sunday services in a nice comfortable chapel at a retirement village where I used to visit were cancelled, one of the residents went to the administration and received permission for us to meet outside at a little park area around a fountain. Someone ran a long extension cord out of a nearby building to power the microphone and while others brought beach chairs to supplement the few park benches, we had available. We printed out flyers to advertise our little gathering and prayed it wouldn’t rain. It was both amazing and wonderful how being outside allowed other residents of the village to see that they had somewhere they could go for fellowship, singing and prayer. Some people wore masks, everyone socially distanced and no one became infected by it. Most of all we discovered that the difficulties encouraged us to work together with everyone and that together we could bring the hope of Christ to our community. One woman did the organizing and scheduling; while two retired pastors took turns moderating our meetings, and I only needed lead the songs.

Eventually we were granted the use of a recreational building where we had air conditioning during our hot Florida summer but the lessons we learned at the fountain were precious and will remain with me forever. We are a family and every family has to work together to find unique solutions in different situations. At another facility, the recreation director eagerly invited us to come sing Christmas carols.

Our Florida solution was to do the caroling around the swimming-pool! Residents from the assisted living building overlooking the pool area could hear the music and as we went on our small group grew in numbers considerably. At the end of our time after we prayed, we turned around to leave and were surprised by one of the staff people with a food-cart serving everyone hot chocolate and ice cream! It reminded me of the scene at the burning bush when God called Moses to go to Egypt and tell Pharaoh to let the Israelite people go. As you can imagine Moses was less than thrilled about how that was going to play out and God asked him a simple question,” What is in your hand?” and Moses answered, “A staff.” (See Exodus 3:2). In that same way, as we stand in front of our own burning bush, wishing we could pass through those flames to answer our own call to serve and God is asking each of us; “What is in your hand?” What opportunities do you have? Who can you ask to help? What abilities and talents has God given you? The answer may be something as insignificant as the stick in Moses’ hand, but God is not as concerned about what we have, but in how able He is to use anything and anyone that is given to Him in order to share the love of Christ with others.
