Living by Faith(fulness)

Behold the proud, His soul is not upright in him; But the just shall live by his faith Habakkuk 2:4

Down in the footnotes you will see that the word “faith” that is used here also means faithfulness. So I was thinking on that I came to realize that while faith is real, it is also something that cannot be observed. Faithfulness, on the other hand is quite observable. In other words I could say, “I have faith in my marriage” but how could that be proved or measured. Faithfulness in marriage is quite another matter. Given the right detective agency yours or my faithfulness to our marriage vows can be quite obvious. That long-term marriage covenant stays a living thing as we each day give our spouse the gift of faithfulness.

Our relationship with Jesus Christ is exactly the same. We are in a covenant relationship with him. Through the prophet Habakkuk God is saying to us exactly the same thing here. “Enough with what you say you believe: show me by your life!” Some days we are so filled with  religious pride that we fail to remember that God is not watching our religious maneuvering, but he is watching our hearts. My prayer today is, “God give me a faithful heart so by days end I can give you a day of faithfulness.”

How good it is to know that we do not serve a God we cannot trust. He is always faithful in ways we can see.

Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!                by Thomas Chisholm

My wife and I serve as members of a worship team at a multicultural church. Our members are from Brazil, Nepal and the U.S.. Because of the many languages and cultures in our local body we face unique challenges, such as how many songs will we do in English today? What new songs can we use in either language that are simple enough for the people to sing. The songs, the devotions and insights here are a small portion of some of the ways God is leading us as we push towards the goal. I pray that these will be both a blessing and an encouragement for those of you who may pass by Praise 2 Worship.
