Than Silver or Gold

Than Silver or Gold

These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 1 Peter 1:7

I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold;
I’d rather be His than have riches untold;

1922 I’d Rather Have Jesus words by Rhea Miller sung by George Beverly Shea

When I was a young man I worked for a Summer in a copper factory. Our job was to take heavy copper pipe and to stretch and anneal the copper till it was soft and thin. The process began by placing the enormous crude pipes in pairs onto a machine called the big bench. The operator would then press the start button and a giant “dog” as they called the puller would come up a long track and lock onto the pointed ends of the tubes. Then slowly yet gradually the pipe was pulled between a die and the block. The result was a hellishly loud screeching as the metal inch by inch yielded to the power of the machine.

In God’s word we can find that the perfecting of our faith is very much the same. God chooses us by grace out of the world and puts us into the cross of His Son. There Jesus firmly takes hold of our heart and by the power of His Holy Spirit draw us to Himself. the testing of our faith at these moments often sounds a lot like the screeching of the metal as it protests the pain of being pulled into a finer and more usable form. At the moment of our pain we need to take hold of the precious promise given to us by the Apostle Peter.  This painful refining of our faith will one day result in something far more valuable than gold. Though we are stretched seemingly to our limits, God has promised He will never  break even a bruised reed. What an amazing God we serve!
